Where is GTA 6 set compared to GTA 5?

GTA 5 took place in San Andreas, Rockstar's satirical take on Southern California. Its big city, Los Santos, spoofed Los Angeles from Vinewood to Vespucci Beach, while Blaine County offered desert, mountains and backwater towns like Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay.

GTA 6 heads across the country to Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida, nicknamed the "Goodtime State." Its metropolis, Vice City, is modeled on Miami: the Art Deco hotels of Ocean Beach, the panaderías of Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and a bustling cruise port. Around it, Rockstar has shown off the islands of the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers swamps, Port Gellhorn's "forgotten coast," the industrial heartland of Ambrosia and the forests of Mount Kalaga.

Jason and Lucia vs. Michael, Franklin and Trevor: what changes?

GTA 5 made waves with three protagonists you could switch between at will: Michael De Santa, a retired bank robber; Franklin Clinton, a young hustler from South Los Santos; and Trevor Philips, Michael's unhinged former partner.

GTA 6 goes with a duo. Jason Duval is an Army veteran working for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys. Lucia Caminos has just walked out of the Leonida Penitentiary, making her the first female lead in a GTA since the series' 2D days. Rockstar's official synopsis describes a couple pulled into a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the entire state after an easy score goes wrong. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who sat in on a demo in October 2026, said the story feels closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than to GTA 5's nihilism. That's his personal take, not a statement from the studio.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5's?

The honest answer: we don't know yet. Rockstar hasn't released an official size for Leonida. It didn't give a figure for GTA 5 either, saying only in 2013 that the map was bigger than Red Dead Redemption, GTA San Andreas and GTA IV combined. None of the precise numbers floating around online are confirmed.

What we do know is that Leonida has at least six major regions, compared with two main areas in GTA 5 (Los Santos and Blaine County). Rockstar also told Bloomberg that GTA 6 has "hundreds" of small interiors to explore, whereas most of Los Santos' buildings were just facades. Our GTA 6 map guide breaks down every region.

What platforms and price for GTA 6 vs GTA 5?

GTA 5 had a remarkable run: it launched September 17, 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, returned on PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014, hit PC in April 2015, then arrived on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022. Take-Two says it has sold more than 200 million copies, putting it among the best-selling games ever.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, after two delays (it was first slated for 2025, then May 26, 2026). No PC version has been announced. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99, compared with $59.99 for GTA 5 in 2013. Get the full breakdown in our pre-order and editions guide.

Does GTA 6 look much better than GTA 5?

The technical leap is obvious: GTA 6 is built exclusively for PS5 and Xbox Series. Rockstar says Trailer 2 and the long-form An Extended Look presentation, which aired in August 2026, were captured entirely in-game on PS5. GTA 5 ran on Rockstar's in-house RAGE engine, heavily overhauled for the occasion; Rockstar hasn't published a detailed tech sheet for GTA 6.

Does GTA 6 have more radio stations than GTA 5?

At launch, GTA 5 offered 15 music stations and 2 talk stations, with more than 240 licensed tracks. For GTA 6, Rockstar promises "the largest and most diverse selection in the series" without giving a total. Six stations were revealed on October 8, 2026, including the return of Flash FM, Vice City's pop institution, alongside Cocoteo FM, Back Country Radio, AfroBank FM, The Chamber 106.6 and Dirty South Classics. The big new feature: on-demand podcasts, which you can even listen to on foot through the characters' smartphones. The original score comes from French duo Justice, and an official 34-track album drops the same day as the game.

Will GTA 6 have an online mode like GTA Online?

Not at launch. When pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, Rockstar described GTA 6 as a single-player experience and announced no multiplayer. For reference, GTA Online arrived on October 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA 5. There's no guarantee GTA 6 will follow the same timeline.

How much did GTA 6 and GTA 5 cost to make?

Rockstar never publishes its budgets. For GTA 5, Scottish newspaper The Scotsman reported in 2013 a cost of around £170 million ($265 million), development and marketing combined. For GTA 6, figures of $1 billion to $2 billion have circulated for years, but they're analyst estimates or rumors. According to coverage of Bloomberg's mid-October 2026 feature, Rockstar disputed the $1.5 billion figure without offering one of its own. What is certain is that development was long: Rockstar confirmed in February 2022 that the project was already well underway, and the game arrives 13 years after GTA 5.
