GTA 6: Rockstar's UK Developers Will Vote on a Union During Launch Week
From November 12 to 26, Rockstar Games' UK staff will vote on whether the studio should recognize the IWGB union. The ballot overlaps with GTA 6's November 19 release.
© Rockstar Games Rockstar Games' UK employees will vote from November 12 to 26, 2026 on whether the studio should officially recognize their union, part of the IWGB (Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain). The ballot, reported on October 27 by Kotaku, GameSpot and PC Gamer, wraps right around the launch of GTA 6, which is set for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If it passes, it would become the largest recognized union in the UK video game industry.
What happens at Rockstar between November 12 and 26?
For two weeks, Rockstar's UK employees, including staff at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, GTA 6's lead studio, will decide whether the company should recognize the union that represents them. According to Kotaku, workers had first asked management to voluntarily recognize the union before the game shipped. Talks that began over the summer didn't produce a deal, which led to this vote.
The timing is hard to miss: the ballot opens on November 12, the same day the GTA 6 preload begins, and closes a week after launch.
What do GTA 6 developers want?
If recognized, the union would be able to negotiate with management over pay and bonuses, overtime pay, layoffs, flexible and remote work, and rules on the use of generative AI. Union committee member Shanti Easton-Steel also told GameSpot about concerns over the gender pay gap, inconsistent overtime policies and job security after release.
IWGB president Alex Marshall called the vote "just as historic as the game release." On the management side, Rockstar publishing head Jennifer Kolbe previously told Bloomberg the company would follow its staff's lead on unionizing: "We go where the team goes."
Why is this vote so sensitive for Rockstar?
The ballot comes amid real tension. In October 2025, Rockstar fired 31 UK employees. The union calls it union busting; the studio says the staff were dismissed for gross misconduct, for sharing confidential information about its games in an external chat channel. The case is before a UK employment tribunal, with closing submissions expected on November 17 and 18, the eve of launch.
Working conditions at Rockstar have been under scrutiny before: in 2018, the final stretch of Red Dead Redemption 2's development reignited the debate over crunch. More broadly, unions are gaining ground across the industry. At Blizzard, more than 1,900 workers reached a union contract with Microsoft, GameSpot notes.
Is GTA 6's release at risk?
No. This is a union recognition vote, not a call to strike, and nothing suggests the game's schedule is in question. GTA 6 still launches on November 19, 2026, at the planned unlock time. For everything that's officially confirmed, our GTA 6 official facts page is updated continuously.
