GTA 6: Criminal Profile, police and weather, what Edge's cover story reveals

Edge's GTA 6 cover story is live: a Criminal Profile that shapes the story, police who rely on witness descriptions, dynamic weather and a map roughly twice the size of GTA V's. Here's everything Rockstar North revealed.

Edge magazine's highly anticipated GTA 6 cover story went live online on Thursday, October 29, 2026. Invited into Rockstar North's Edinburgh headquarters, writer Simon Parkin watched 90 minutes of unscripted gameplay played by co-studio head Rob Nelson. The big takeaways: a Criminal Profile that shapes Jason and Lucia's story, police who work from witness descriptions, far more granular weather than GTA V, and a map roughly twice as big.

What is the Criminal Profile in GTA 6?

It's the biggest reveal in the feature. Inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, the Criminal Profile tracks Jason and Lucia's behavior on a scale from "Professional" to "Irredeemable," represented by angel and devil icons. A calculating criminal can incapacitate an enemy instead of killing them, or try threats and intimidation before reaching for a gun. Players who shoot first and ask questions later will build a violent profile.

It isn't just cosmetic, either: Rockstar says your Criminal Profile will influence how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds.

How does Jason and Lucia's relationship work?

As in GTA V, you can switch between characters whenever the story allows. But the bond between the two leads is now measured on a four-point scale that mostly grows the more time they spend together: walks on the beach, bike rides, gym sessions (once they've paid for a membership) or simply driving around. Asked whether the couple can get married, Rob Nelson would neither confirm nor deny it. "As the game progresses, it's yours to keep or yours to lose," he says of their relationship.

How do the police track you in GTA 6?

No more simply waiting for the stars to fade. A "heat" system tracks what the police know about you: your physical description, whether you were alone or with a partner, what you were wearing, the weapon you used and whether CCTV caught you. Those details appear as icons at the top of the screen. To escape, you have to make yourself less recognizable: split up from your partner, change clothes or ditch the weapon.

Stealing a car is riskier too: some drivers are armed and fight back, and newer models may carry a tracker.

What is the weather like in GTA 6?

Where GTA V relied on preset conditions, GTA 6 moves its clouds according to wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. You can watch a storm build on the horizon, then see roads get wet and dry out at different rates. A plane caught in a storm can even take light damage. "This game is much more granular," says co-studio head Aaron Garbut. The day-night cycle has also been extended substantially: according to Nelson, with GTA V's timings, "everything felt too fast."

How big is the GTA 6 map?

According to Edge, the Leonida map is roughly twice the size of GTA V's. Rockstar says its total landmass, Vice City included, is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. Garbut also points to "an order of magnitude more interiors" than in previous games, echoing what the studio told Bloomberg about the hundreds of interiors to explore.

What other new details does the feature reveal?

  • Pedestrians: around 600,000 animations were created.
  • Smells: a disgust reaction first built for a single location became a wider system that makes the leads grimace in filthy places.
  • Transit: buses and trains fully work. Phil Hooker, the third head of development, admits he has memorized every bus route.
  • Vehicles: every vehicle has a fuel gauge and engine health readout. The Scooter Bros app delivers your car in seconds, and the WAINK app lists models wanted by fences.

Why does this feature matter?

Edge had announced this 16-page feature for issue 430: it's the most detailed gameplay presentation published by the press ahead of launch, and it confirms how much the game owes to Red Dead Redemption 2: a reactive world, overlapping systems and a stronger bond between players and their characters. With three weeks to go before the November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Nelson says simply: "It's ready." Garbut sums up the scale of the project with one image: "I feel like we've built a pyramid on Everest."
