GTA 6 Will Have Hundreds of Explorable Interiors, Rockstar Tells Bloomberg

Rockstar North's leads told Bloomberg's Jason Schreier that GTA 6 features hundreds of small interiors to explore. The report also reveals the studio's long struggle over the weapon wheel.

GTA 6 will feature "hundreds" of small interiors that players can walk into and explore. That's what Rockstar North's leads told Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, whom they hosted at their Edinburgh studio a few weeks before the game's November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The report, published in mid-October, also details years of experimentation around the weapon wheel.

How many interiors will GTA 6 have?

Rockstar hasn't shared an official number. Speaking to Bloomberg, studio leads including Aaron Garbut and Rob Nelson simply mentioned "hundreds" of small places to explore. One of them summed it up this way: there are so many of these little interiors, hundreds of them, that you can go and discover.

Aaron Garbut stressed the care that went into each of these spaces, handcrafted down to the smallest detail: who sits where, what customers are drinking, the marks left on a table. Unofficial lists with far more precise totals are circulating on social media, but none of those figures has been confirmed, so it's best to stick with the studio's wording.

To appreciate the change, think back to GTA V: the vast majority of buildings in Los Santos were just facades, and only a handful of locations, often tied to missions or shops, could be entered. Across Leonida, hundreds of interiors would give cities like Vice City far more depth.

What did the Bloomberg demo show?

During this behind-the-scenes presentation, which Jason Schreier watched, Rob Nelson was on the controller. It showed Jason doing squats at a gym while Lucia ran on a treadmill. The pair then went to case a bank, before backing off because of the number of guards.

The couple then settled for a smaller target: the back room of a gas station, where they managed to grab the cash without tripping the alarm. The sequence illustrates Rockstar's approach: interiors aren't just set dressing, they create gameplay opportunities, from scouting to improvised robberies.

Why did Rockstar almost ditch the weapon wheel?

In a video published after his visit, Jason Schreier explained that the team wanted a more realistic inventory system, inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, where the character carries only a limited number of weapons. With that constraint, GTA V's wheel risked showing empty slots.

According to the reporter, developers spent "months, if not years" testing all kinds of alternatives, even removing the interface entirely. After all that experimentation, they ultimately returned to a classic weapon wheel, the one seen in the long An Extended Look demo. Jason Schreier reports that this trial-and-error period, marked by the challenge of reconciling Red Dead Redemption 2's realism with GTA's more arcade spirit, frustrated some of the teams, to the point that some designers left the studio.

Will GTA 6's story feel like Red Dead Redemption 2?

That's Jason Schreier's impression. Based on what he saw, the narrative seems to him more inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2 than by GTA V, whose nihilism he finds quickly tiresome. A Rockstar lead described GTA 6 to him as the story of two people who enjoy spending time together.

This is a personal opinion, however, formed during a presentation the reporter watched without playing himself. Rockstar hasn't detailed the influences behind its story. Players will be able to judge for themselves in less than a month.
